Currently working as a Natural Resources Technician III for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Chris’s passion for the natural world is infectious. Learn how his education in the Natural Resources & Wildlife Technology program at Garrett College fueled his dedication to conserving our environment. Exploring nature with Chris and learning about edible plants and wild mushrooms just can’t be beat.

Hands-On Learning:                                                                                                                                                                                                         This experiential walk and talk will have you exploring the woods as Chris teaches you to discover, identify and responsibly harvest edible plants and wild mushrooms. Dive deep into the fascinating world of fungi and plants and learn the vital role they play in our ecosystem.

Cooking Tips and Recipes:                                                                                                                                                                                            After your foraging adventure, enjoy a discussion on the many benefits of the plants and fungi you’ve found. Birds of Prey – A Fun Learning Experience

Meet hawks, owls and falcons and more in this two hour, Birds of Prey Fun Learning Experience with Deron and Sherry Meador of Adventures with Raptors. 

So many birds, so much fun!

Just 20 minutes from Deep Creek Lake.

See these amazing Birds of Prey up close, in person and be able to take pictures. A truly fantastic time to share with family and friends. It’s the perfect activity for kids and adults.

BIRDS OF PREY WILDLIFE PROGRAM 2024

  • SUMMER PROGRAM INFORMATION:
  • Where: Friendsville Town Park – near the stage, beside The Community Center. Turn left just after the Bear Creek Bridge into Parking Area for the Community Center, Community Drive.
  • When: Mondays 10:00am until 12:00 noon beginning June 10th.
  • RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED– Please do not make reservations unless you are serious about coming. We usually end up turning folks away who really want to come. Please cancel the day before if you can’t make it. Please arrive early so we can start on time.
  • Cost: $20 per person.

  • If small children get antsy, don’t worry, there’s lots of room to let them run around.
  • This beautiful park offers: a big playground, picnic areas, sand volleyball court, 2 tennis courts, horseshoe pits, basketball court, fitness trail, paved walking and biking trail, and a ramp for river and beach access.
This unique and very special two-hour program features many raptors including birds such as the: Red Tailed Hawk, Burrowing Owl, Great Horned Owl, Harris Hawk, Barn Owl, Barred Owl, Augar Buzzard, Ferruginous Hawk, Crested Caracara, Coopers Hawk, Milky Eagle Owl, Black Vultures and more.

Each week we try and mix in some new birds so you never know exactly what you will see in every program.

Learn about each unique bird species, its habits, where they are from and how we care for and train these birds for falconry or as educational birds. You will also learn about Adventures with Raptors, their aviary and the services they provide such as: the capture and transport of injured raptors to Maryland’s Owl Moon Rehab Center, genetic support for zoological breeding programs, captive bred birds for wildlife educators and nature centers and hunting birds for falconers throughout the country.

Sometimes, depending on breeding pairs and season we have some very young baby birds too.
