January 10th 2021 Snow Report

Snowpack is still holding really well on our north facing mountain and we had a great tour with Tiffany, Loni and their kids. I.m sure that in much of the Deep Creek Lake Area you can’t find much natural snow in the woods. Snow is insufficient at Swallow Falls and we are looking forward to returning there as the winter snowfall returns.

Until then we’ll drive a little further into Garrett Forest where we are finding pretty great conditions on Snaggy Mountain. We are OPEN FOR TOURS!

Pictures are from Sunday January 10th, 2021. We anticipate the snow holding out for a few weeks unless we get rain. Which is not in the forecast. Winter should come back. STAY TUNED. CALL FOR THE LATEST INFORMATION 301-746-4083

January 9th, 2020 Snow Report – Deep Creek Lake

January 9th, 2020 Snow Report – Deep Creek Lake

Good news is we do have enough snow for snowshoeing tours! We do have a a few spaces for Sunday the 10th and we will be offering tours this coming week and next weekend. We are actually getting a little bit of a durable base of snowpack on the north facing slopes. Snow is in the forecast!

Where we are offering the tours right now can best be described as our secret north facing’ snow pocket close to the Cranesville Sub Artic Swamp. You may see no snow where you are.

Snowshoeing is practical on the hard snowpack, although there are some bare spots. Fortunately ground is frozen and enough snow remains to have a great time. The snowshoes enable great climbing and descending and keep you from stepping in holes. They are the ultimate in four wheel drive on two legs.

Slideshow above is Saturday January 9th Tour.

With snow in the forecast and cold nights (and not any rain in the forecast), we are confident we will have snow for the next 7-10 days. To make a reservation call us at 301-746-4083. Tours will mostly 9am till 11am n the morning to take advantage of the cold mornings.

Wisp has good snow for downhill skiing..

PARK UPDATE – Cross country skiing and snowshoe rentals appear to be closed at all the State Parks.

January 1st 2021 Snow Report

January 1st 2021 Snow Report

Weather is up and down as usual. However we have moved our tours to our snow and frost pocket near Cranesville. The north slope is really holding snow and we’ll be reporting on how it is surviving. December 31st tour found some deep snow and good conditions. We are pretty confident tours on decent snow can continue for us. When snow is your business you figure out where it lies deep. The conditions around you DO NOT necessarily reflect conditions found on our tours. Swallow Falls has lost its snow in many areas.

December 27th Weather and Snow Report

Weather is up and down. We have been having some great tours with incredible winter beauty. A nice frozen layer in the base should be sufficient and is good for snowshoeing tours to be practical and should allow us to get through the next thaw cycle.

Call for the latest in conditions and tour availability. Trips going out almost everyday during the holidays. LIMITED TRIP SIZE IS 10 GUESTS by MARYLAND STATE ORDER.

WHITE CHRISTMAS IN THE WEATHER FORECAST FOR DEEP CREEK LAKE MARYLAND!!!

It’s been a roller coaster of wetaher in the mountains of western Maryland. Three great days of snowshoeing up until last Tuesday and then wham a big thaw. Some of our best storms start off with some rain. Some of the base should withstand and with sno on top conditons could be great for tours though New Years. So far this winter its going great. We like nothing more than posting winter storm watches and warnings for the Deep Creek Lake area! We are hopeful and the long term forecast looks like winter is settling in! This next snow is coming with some wind so it should drift nicely in our back country area.

Deep Creek Lake Snow Report and Weather Forecast Links: Well folks it looks like we may get a nice storm Wednesday and Thursday leading into the weekend. Skiing at the Wisp should be great on the open slopes with no rain in the forecast. Whew! Wisp Resort Webcam

As far as snowshoeing tours, the last bout of snow did not amount to much and warm temps are following today with some sun so just traces and drifts around on the ‘mountain top’ at Deep Creek Lake. Where we live in Friendsville there is no snow to speak of.

This storm could bring a nice depth of 12 inches. That would be enough to snowshoe this weekend since ground may freeze up a little prior to the storm. You can make a reservation and your tour will convert to a special guided hike if snow does not accumulate enough to justify wearing snowshoes. As is usual we won’t really know conditions until the last minute. Feel free to call us for the latest.

ACCUWEATHER -In our opinion the best for western MD weather forecasts.

snow report

Snow Report December 1st, 2020

Snow Report December 1st, 2020

Currently it is snowing quite hard in and around the Deep Creek Lake Area. Predicted snowfall accumulation might reach 10 inches. However the snow is falling on a wet ground with no base and the ground is thawed.

It doesn’t appear as if this first storm of the year will allow for snowshoeing tours to commence. If we try and snowshoe without an adequate frozen base or sufficient snow amounts the snow just balls up underneath the snowshoes and lifts up. Leaving not much coverage (if any) for the rest of the people following.

However, this snowy weather may make for gorgeous winter hiking this weekend. Come join us for a guided hike Saturday at 9am.

The Wisp is currently making snow. No open date has been announced yet.
